Ode to a Dog's Devotion

Whenever I come in contact with a dog, I just can't help myself. I come alive in such a way that it causes my husband to remark that I love animals more than I love him. It's not true of course, but it's good to keep him thinking thusly, as it ensures that he strives harder to measure up to my devotion to all things furry. Part of that devotion to my devotion, is he buys me books or sends me poems or quotes from famous people about animals. One poem in particular struck me as the epitome of why we should give "our all" to our beloved dogs.

"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love, and his leader. He will be yours,
faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."

Dog is God spelt backwards.

Read "Epitaph to a Dog" by poet Lord Byron. Best ever written. I love my dog. Dog is God spelt backwards. Dogs have "constant factor"...and all man's virtues without his vices... Byron

Epitaph for a dog - Lord Byron
by: Walter L

I learned the poem when I was just a boy and it has been a part of my spiritual DNA all of my life. I cannot recite or even think about the last few lines of the poem without choking up. After a scathing indictment of humanity Byron concludes the poem:

"Ye who perchance behold this simple urn; pass on, it honors none you wish to mourn. To mark a friend's remains these stones arise; I never knew but one - and here he lies".
