Phoenix, My Very Best Friend

On June 11, 2009, I lost my very best friend of 14 1/2 years. Phoenix was a German Shepherd/terrier mix and I received her as a gift in January 1995. I didn't know at the time what a great gift she actually was.

Phoenix provided me with constant companionship until the day she took her last breath. She used to love to play and be by my side. Phoenix was always there for me... through thick and thin. It doesn't matter what type of day I was having... she was always there with a waggy tail and a hug. She was the most loyal friend a person could ever hope for.

In May, 2009, the vet told me that Phoenix had liver disease and kidney failure. At that point, I knew that Phoenix wasn't going to be around much longer. Phoenix got really sick the week before I had to make the gut-wrenching decision to put her to sleep. I knew it was time for her to go. That was the toughest thing I have ever had to do in my entire life.

I was there for Phoenix while she took her last breath at the vet's office. Not a day goes by that I haven't missed Phoenix. It has been 3 weeks today, and it still hurts. I still can't believe she's gone.

Phoenix, you are sadly missed and no other dog in the world could ever come close to taking your place in my heart. You were a very special friend to me. Phoenix, may you forever live in my heart.
